Employers to Join the Fight Against Obesity

It’s no surprise that obesity among Americans has grown at an alarming rate – according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than one-third of U.S. adults (or 35.7%) are obese, and obesity now accounts for 21% of healthcare costs, according to a study at Cornell University. Its effects on workers’ compensation are just as startling. CDC estimates that employers spend $13 billion annually on the total cost of obesity. In a study released last month, The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) found that “obesity contributes in significant ways to the length of time during which claimants receive indemnity benefits.” Additionally, the study linked obesity to increased risk of injury and medical costs that are many times that of non-obese claimants.
